2009 South Carolina AHEC Nursing, Dental & Medicine Career Academy
South Carolina AHEC 2009 Nursing, Dental and Medicine Academy Fellows participated in both clinical and didactic sessions facilitated by faculty and staff from the Medical University of South Carolina, South Carolina State University and practicing health professionals.
This year’s topics included defining and identifying health disparities, disease processes, cultural competence, and health profession fundamentals. Professional networking was provided through shadowing experiences and dinner forums with health professional students as well as practicing and retired professionals. Sessions focusing on admission criteria provided assistance in the development of a personal statements and transcript evaluation. Interdisciplinary sessions promoted the value and necessity of the healthcare team.
The week culminated with group poster presentations judged by faculty and staff of the Medical University of South Carolina. The development and inclusion of a group Power Point presentations is also a required component of the Academy.
