Controlling Clostridium Difficile Infections"

This SCHOOLS presentation is a counterpart for its sister article in the latest edition of Progressnotes (Progressnotes Article) and will focus on making the right preventive, diagnostic and treatment choices to better control Clostridium difficile infections. At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Describe the increased disease severity and mortality associated with the more virulent NAP1 strain of C. difficile and list the pharmacological approaches that have been most effective in its control
• Identify the antibiotics typically associated with development of C. difficile infection (CDI) and use good antibiotic stewardship in helping prevent the spread of CDI
• Recognize the importance of the new polymerase chain reaction assay in identifying CDI early and implement appropriate infection control precautions promptly to minimize the spread of CDI
• Describe some of the new directions in the prevention of CDI, including fecal transplants and probiotics

Target Audience: Physicians, Nurses, Pharmacists,and Physician Assistants.
