Rick Foster MD

Dr. Rick Foster has served as a senior executive with SCHA for over 10 years, initially serving as Senior VP for Quality and Patient Safety. Over the past 3 years, he has assumed the role of Executive Director of Catalyst for Health, a new business enterprise within SCHA focused on guiding and supporting collective efforts to improve health and healthcare at the population and community level across SC. He also serves as medical director for Sharing Hope SC, the Organ Procurement Organization for South Carolina. Prior to joining SCHA, Rick served as chief medical officer for Trident Health System in Charleston, S.C. His primary responsibilities at SCHA include leading the work of Catalyst for Health as the primary backbone organization for the Alliance for a Healthier South Carolina and providing consultative services and technical assistance to SC organizations at the state and community levels committed to achieving the Triple Aim of better health and healthcare for all South Carolinians at lower cost through collective impact.

Rick’s previous medical administrative experience includes service as chief executive officer of the Carolina Health Group, a provider network management company that acted as the management arm for three multi-specialty IPA Networks in the Coastal Region of South Carolina; and as the medical director of Companion Healthcare, the HMO subsidiary of Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina.

Dr. Foster received his BS from Clemson University and his MD from the Medical University of South Carolina. He completed his residency in Family Medicine at Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood, S.C., and was in the private practice of family medicine in Surfside Beach and Charleston prior to joining Companion Healthcare.

Dr. Foster presently serves on the following Boards: Sharing Hope SC, Carolinas Center for Hospice and End of Life Care, Palmetto Care Connections, chair of the PASOs Advisory Board, and co-chair of the SC Translational Research Center Community Advisory Board. He has previously served on the SCHA Board of Trustees, the Board of Directors of the Trident United Way and Hospice of Charleston, the Board of Visitors for Charleston Southern University, the Board of Trustees of the Charleston Collegiate School, and as the chairman of the S.C. Senior Medical Leadership Council.

Rick is married to Lesa Hart Foster and has four children and four grandchildren. He serves as a senior elder at Johns Island Presbyterian Church.
