Description: This program will provide an overview of the research concerning the negative effects of corporal punishment and discuss the policy statement issued by The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). It will provide alternatives to corporal punishment that are available to parents and give teaching points that can be incorporated in the professional practice setting. The foundations of how to broach the subject of corporal punishment in a variety of settings will be discussed using a delivery method that is non-offensive to the parent’s beliefs, therefore more productive.

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the components of the AAP policy statement on corporal punishment and the negative impact of corporal punishment on the health of the child.
  • Discuss healthy alternatives to corporal punishment based on developmental stages.
  • Describe effective communication techniques to begin non-threatening, culturally competent conversations with parents about their practice of corporal punishment.
