JoAn Stanek DNP, RN, CHPN
Dr. JoAn Stanek has 40 years of experience caring for patients with neurological, neurosurgical, orthopedic, and rehabilitation needs, with a focus on spinal cord injuries. In 2013, she expanded her practice to hospice care, working as a per diem staff nurse in an inpatient hospice facility. Recognizing gaps in nursing education, Dr. Stanek integrated palliative and end-of-life content into her teaching through lectures, classroom activities, and simulation. She guest lectures on grief and loss in mental health courses and teaches the interprofessional elective “Death and Bereavement Across the Life Span,” where she developed an unfolding case study to enhance interprofessional communication and role understanding in end-of-life care. Dr. Stanek has received grants from the North Carolina Area Health Education Centers and the Hospice and Home Care Foundation of North Carolina to support education in hospice and home care nursing.
