James Matthew Orr Ph.D

Dr. Matthew Orr came to the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 2008 from Mercer University School of Medicine, Macon, Georgia. In addition to serving as an assistant professor at Mercer University, he was Director of the Marriage and Family Therapy Post-Masters' Certificate Program, Director of the Medical Family Therapy Fellowship and the Marriage and Family Therapy Off-site Practicum Coordinator. 

Prior to his employment with Mercer University, Dr. Orr's professional experience includes a faculty position with the WestGate Training and Consultation Network Marriage and Family Therapy Program at Converse College, Spartanburg, South Carolina. He has also served as a marriage and family therapist and mental health counselor with various agencies, including the South Carolina Department of Mental Health. 

After receiving a bachelor of science in family and child sciences from Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida, Dr. Orr earned a master of science in marriage and family therapy from East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina. He then obtained a doctorate in marriage and family therapy from Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas. He is a licensed marriage and family therapist with special interests in ADHD, parent-child relationships, anxiety, stress reduction and the relaxation response, mindfulness, sport psychology and performance enhancement, brief solution-focused counseling in primary care, and he is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT).
