Description: This SCHOOLS presentation is a counterpart for its sister article in the latest edition of Progressnotes and will discuss the importance of controlling hypertension, the leading risk factor for stroke, in African Americans. He will also provide guidance on recognizing and treating silent and whispering strokes, often underdiagnosed in African Americans because the symptoms are more subtle, as well as recommendations from reducing the risk of stroke in children with sickle cell disease. Recognize that hypertension, more aggressive in African Americans, places them at an increased incidence of stroke and recurrent stroke
Discuss the underdiagnosis of silent and whispering strokes in African Americans and its consequences on their outcomes
Discuss why frequent monitoring of children with sickle cell is necessary to prevent stroke and the treatments that can be used to prevent stroke in children identified as at high risk
