Description
Elderly Americans consume on-third of all of the prescription medications prescribed each year, yet they comprise less than 13% of the population. (Acad 2005; CDC 2005). The relatively high rates of drug consumption by elderly patients and numerous other factors contribute to the increased prevalence of medication-associated morbidity and mortality affecting this population. (Clinical Interventions in Aging 2008:3(2) Bushardt et al). The purpose of this program is to equip the provider with the knowledge to better identify patient the patient at risk for polypharmacy, take necessary measures to systematically review their drug regimens and to better familiarize providers with commonly used antipsychotic agents used in the treatment of dementia.

Keywords: Polypharmacy, Dementia, Elderly, antipsychotic

Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • 1. Describe how the aging body affects the metabolism, distribution and excretion of medications
  • 2. Describe how to recognize elderly patients who are at risk for polypharmacy or hyperpharmacotherapy.
  • 3. Evaluate a method for systematically reviewing the drug regimens of these patients.
  • 4. Identify common scenarios and patient behaviors that can lead to polypharmacy.
  • 5. List interventions that practitioners can employ to address these common scenarios and patient behaviors
  • 6. Discuss the methodology of how the Beer’s list was generated.
  • 8. Discuss the classes of typical and atypical antipsychotic agents, reviewing the basic pharmacology, and pharmacokinetics.
