Description
Long acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) have been shown to be a highly effective, long-term contraceptive solution in women. Available options include intrauterine devices (IUDs) and sub-dermal hormonal implants. Despite their proven high efficacy, a lack of knowledge in the medical community as well as barriers to access have limited their use. This program aims to provide a baseline education on the pharmacological options available in the United States, explore the framework of an effective patient-centered discussion, as well identify potential barriers.

Keywords: Choose Well Contraception LARC

Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss trends of LARC prescribing from the 1980s until present day
  • Identify and navigate potential barriers to access
  • Review the available pharmacologic devices including IUDs and subnormal hormonal implants
  • Determine appropriate selection of LARCs for specific patient types including appropriate engagement in a patient-centered discussion.
