Description
Understanding the family background of our clients can help both the client and the practitioner avoid therapeutic pitfalls, thus facilitating a smoother course of treatment. The genogram, or therapeutic family tree, is a quick and effective tool with which to gather this information. The genogram can be used in both individual and family therapy, as well as case presentations and clinical supervision. Not only does the genogram give us a visual representation of a client’s family structure, it can help the therapist and the client discover generational alliances and conflicts that continue to exert considerable influence in the client’s life. Additionally, doing a personal genogram can help the clinician understand the family values and experiences that s/he brings into the therapeutic space, hopefully decreasing counter-transference. issues. Workshop participants will learn standard genogram symbology, how to construct and interpret a genogram, and begin their own personal genograms, ending the day with increased knowledge and tools to enhance therapeutic effectiveness.

Keywords: Genograms

Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Produce a genogram using standard symbols.
  • Identify family patterns and learn how to use these to improve therapeutic outcomes.
  • Know how to use a genogram in case presentation/clinical supervision.
  • Identify patterns within one’s own genogram and learn how these might impact one’s work with clients.
