Description
Implicit biases that derive from cultural stereotypes affect our unconscious thinking and decision-making in ways that perpetuate health inequities. This interactive, two-hour workshop explores biases amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic and best practices to positively improve the patient care experience. Participants will gain a clear understanding of implicit bias/unconscious bias and learn practical skills needed to mitigate biases and successfully create more inclusive healthcare environments.

Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Define implicit bias.
  • Discuss how implicit bias related to environment (rural communities), race, age, insurance status and education and how the COVID-19 pandemic amplified those biases.
  • Develop tools to improve the quality of care in rural communities.

The Health Equity Initiative is part of a national project by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), supported by funding through the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act. Participants MUST attend 90% of the program to receive the allotted contact hours for that program. Partial cre edit will not be given.
