Description
This program is designed to prepare the selected LPN to perform procedures and to administer ordered treatments via peripheral intravenous access devices and lines per the Advisory Opinions of the State Board of Nursing for South Carolina. Prerequisites: Licensed as an LPN in the state of South Carolina. Signed approval from the employing agency Current CPR card Course Completion Requirements: Score of 80% or greater on a written post test Acceptance performance on return demonstration skills Must attend both days

Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the Advisory Opinions of the SC Board of Nursing on Scope of responsibilities in administering intravenous therapy.
  • List the indications for intravenous therapy.
  • Review the basic anatomy of arteries and veins.
  • Select appropriate vein based on patient assessment and therapy ordered.
  • Select appropriate IV devices and equipment based on patient assessment and therapy ordered.
  • Relate the principles of fluid and electrolyte balance to IV therapy.
  • Identify commonly used IV solutions, indications, and effects of each.
  • Recognize local and systemic complications of IV therapy and the prevention and management of each.
  • Perform venipuncture (for the purpose of IV therapy) on models using aseptic technique and under the guidelines of universal precautions.
  • Insert and maintain intermittent peripheral access devices.
  • Discontinue peripheral IV devices, fluids, and intermittent peripheral access devices
  • Calculate and regulate IV administration rates.
  • Identify the advantaged and disadvantages of drug administration via the IV route.
  • Identify the three main types of IV drug incompatibilities and the prevention and management of each.
  • Describe the important safety points in administering drugs intravenously.
  • Record IV’s per facility policies and procedures.
  • Review flushing and maintenance of PICC lines.
  • Assess arm measurement and PICC line dressing.
  • Demonstrate how to flush a PICC line with saline.
