Description
This one-day conference will offer education to first responders, advocates, and other community stakeholders who care for victims of violence. Presenters will explore best practices in caring for many different victim populations, as well as how best to combat compassion fatigue in themselves, with the end goal being to improve the response to victims of violent crime in the Pee Dee Region by providing a consistent, competent, and collaborative, inter-disciplinary response, ensuring a victim-centered, trauma-informed transition from victim to survivor.

Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify best practices when working with the Hispanic Population
  • Discuss why it is important to apply identified best practice when working with the Hispanic Population.
  • Identify cultural differences.
  • Support Hispanic clients in a culturally competent manner.
  • Support bilingual staff.
  • Discuss the scope and impact of online crimes against children.
  • Discuss the laws governing internet crimes against children.
  • Identify at-risk children and implement protective strategies.
  • Identify AI, dark web activities, and evolving technologies in exploitation.
  • Identify the odor that ESD K9’s detect.
  • Discuss legal aspects of an ESD K9.
  • Define thermography.
  • Identify how thermography could be used in assault crimes.
  • Discuss how research and data collection can validate use of thermography in assault crimes.
  • Explain the need for specific laws to address non-fatal strangulation assaults.
  • Discuss the benefits of passing a law specific to non-fatal strangulation.
  • Improve self-awareness.
  • Identify personal and professional areas that need improvement.
  • Develop a plan for long-term success.
  • Implement actionable steps to provide a higher level of service and reduce burnout.
  • Recognize common injuries seen in children.
  • Distinguish abusive vs. non-abusive injuries.
  • Recognize comment anogenital findings in non-abused children.
  • Recognize diagnostic findings of sexual abuse.
  • Discuss the degrees of domestic violence.
  • Explore the key concepts of Domestic Violence.
  • Recognize the importance of documenting strangulation.
  • Identify resources in the community.
  • Explain the risk factors, lethality issues and dynamics of domestic violence.
  • Discuss the role of the SANE nurse.
  • Discuss evidentiary value.
