Description
This webinar provides an overview of Children’s Advocacy Centers (CACs) in South Carolina, with a focus on their structure, function, and impact on healthcare providers in the Pee Dee region. CACs utilize a multidisciplinary team (MDT) model that brings together healthcare professionals, law enforcement, child protective services, mental health providers, and legal professionals to coordinate the investigation, treatment, and prevention of child abuse in a child-friendly, trauma-informed environment. Participants will explore how regional CACs—such as the South Carolina Network of Children’s Advocacy Centers and local centers like the Durant Children’s Center and CARE House of the Pee Dee—support coordinated care delivery, reduce duplication of services, and improve outcomes for pediatric patients experiencing abuse or neglect. The webinar will also examine the implications for healthcare providers, including mandated reporting responsibilities, participation in MDTs, trauma-informed care practices, documentation standards, and collaboration with community partners. Regional data and examples will highlight the scope of CAC services in the Pee Dee, where hundreds of children receive coordinated medical, forensic, and behavioral health services annually. By the end of the session, participants will better understand their role within the CAC framework and how collaboration with CACs enhances patient care, supports legal processes, and strengthens community health outcomes.
Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the role and structure of Children’s Advocacy Centers (CACs) in South Carolina, including the multidisciplinary team (MDT) model and core services (e.g., forensic interviews, medical evaluations, and advocacy).
  • Explain how CACs reduce trauma and improve care coordination for children experiencing abuse or neglect by minimizing repeated interviews and integrating services across disciplines.
  • Identify the responsibilities of healthcare providers within the CAC model, including mandated reporting, documentation, participation in MDT case review, and collaboration with investigative agencies.
  • Discuss the impact of CACs on healthcare delivery in the Pee Dee region, including improved patient outcomes, streamlined referrals, and enhanced access to trauma-informed services.
  • Apply trauma-informed care principles in clinical practice when working with pediatric patients who may be victims of abuse.
  • Recognize opportunities for interprofessional collaboration between healthcare providers and CAC partners to improve patient safety and community health outcomes.
