Description
This hands-on healthcare career exploration activity introduces high school students to the fundamentals of venipuncture, the process of accessing a vein to collect a blood specimen for laboratory testing. Students will learn about the role of phlebotomists and the importance of accurate, safe, and professional blood collection in the healthcare setting. During the session, students will begin by reviewing the basic anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system, with an emphasis on veins commonly used for venipuncture. Students will explore the equipment used during a blood draw, including needles, collection tubes, tourniquets, gloves, alcohol pads, and other personal protective equipment. Instruction will also emphasize infection prevention, patient identification, proper positioning, communication, and safety procedures associated with blood specimen collection. Following the instructional portion, students will participate in a hands-on simulation using a venipuncture training mannequin arm. Under the guidance of a healthcare professional, students will practice proper venipuncture techniques, including identifying appropriate veins, preparing the equipment, maintaining proper infection-control procedures, positioning the needle, and safely performing a simulated blood draw. Students will also have the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a controlled environment while receiving feedback and guidance from the facilitator.
Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the equipment required to safely perform a blood draw.
  • Demonstrate proper venipuncture techniques, including vein selection, positioning, needle handling, and simulated blood collection using a mannequin arm.
  • Understand the importance of infection control, patient safety, communication, and professionalism during the venipuncture process.
