This is a one hour presentation covering the current opioid crisis, with a focus on how opioid analgesics cause pain relief as well as dependence and addiction. By the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to assess which prescription opioids would be best suited for acute versus chronic pain management, how opioids cause changes in pain receptors in the nervous system, which opioids have a high likelihood of abuse, and what medications are available for the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD).

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the opioid epidemic and the consequences associated with opioid use.
  • Review the pharmacology of prescription and nonprescription opioid analgesics (relative potency, time to onset of effect, duration of activity, available formulations).
  • Evaluate various options for the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD).
The Rural Communities Opioid Response Program (RCORP) is a multi-year initiative supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to address barriers to access in rural communities related to substance use disorder, including opioid use disorder.
