Patient education is much more than teaching quickly before a patient is discharged. At that time, the patient is much more worried about how to care for themselves once they leave the hospital. Consequently, they do not hear much that is said. This course helps the participant understand health literacy and patient education strategies that may be utilized while ensuring that learning has occurred. Methods of patient/caregiver engagement are examined while also looking at the barriers that may exist for the nurse and the patient. Other subjects covered during the course include critical thinking and communication along with their relationship with patient education. Case studies allow the participant to practice the application of the methods learned during the course.

Keywords: patient, education, nurse

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • List the components of the patient education process.
  • State at least two strategies which can be utilized by nursing to engage the patient, family, and caregiver in the education process.
  • Identify the barriers faced by nurses in providing relevant patient education on a daily basis.
  • Describe the role of communication in providing more focused patient education.
