Description
This program will provide education on Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, insulin and insulin pump therapy, and the recognition and treatment of hyper and hypoglycemia in school aged children.

Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • define type 1 and type 2 diabetes and describe basic pathophysiology relevant to school-aged children.
  • identify commonly used school health forms for students with diabetes.
  • differentiate required versus individualized accommodations for students with diabetes.
  • recognize signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia and outline appropriate treatment protocols.
  • explain differences between blood glucose and sensor glucose readings for school-based decision making.
  • describe insulin delivery methods including injections and pump therapy and how to troubleshoot common school-day issues.
  • identify ketone monitoring methods and execute appropriate management steps per individualized dosing plan.
  • recognize available state and national resources that assist school nurses in supporting students with diabetes.
