Description
Is it a rule? Is it a law? Is it a policy? Or Is it just the right thing to do? Physical therapist in today’s complex healthcare environment are faced with frequent challenges in discerning how to navigate the tangled web of Federal Regulations, State Laws, Commercial Insurance Payer Policies and Facility Policies all while trying to do what is right for the patient. In this course we will break down the difference between State law and Federal laws. We will distinguish the difference in supervisory rules for different settings and different payers. We will delineate how SC State Law differs from payer regulations. We will discuss what professionalism means in physical therapy and how to navigate professionalism issues with staff. We will learn a process for evaluating ethical and legal dilemmas. We will use case studies to apply the information to realistic cases so that participants can see how to apply this information to daily practice.

Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Articulate 5 key laws and regulations that govern healthcare practice for physical therapists in South Carolina.
  • Articulate documentation requirements for all SC physical therapists and physical therapist assistants.
  • Define the key principles of ethics.
  • Analyze an ethical case study and develop a resolution plan.
  • Distinguish between legal and ethical issues presented in case studies.
  • Define professionalism.
  • Articulate a resolution plan for a professionalism challenge.
  • Perform a self-assessment and develop a personal action plan for improvement.
