Description
This session explores how unresolved or the current action of healing trauma whether from past experiences, ongoing stress, or workplace-specific incidents can influence employee behavior, communication, performance, and relationships on the job. Participants will learn to recognize common trauma responses (fight, flight, freeze, fawn) as they appear in everyday workplace interactions, understand the neuroscience behind these reactions, and explore practical, compassionate strategies for creating a psychologically safer work environment. This is not a clinical training in trauma treatment, but a session built in building awareness designed to reduce stigma, improve peer and leadership responses, and point people toward appropriate support resources.
Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Define trauma in a workplace-relevant context, distinguishing between acute, chronic, and complex trauma.
  • Identify common behavioral signs of trauma responses at work (e.g., hypervigilance, withdrawal, conflict avoidance, irritability, difficulty with feedback or authority).
  • Explain the basic neuroscience of the stress response (fight/flight/freeze/fawn) and why these reactions can be triggered by seemingly minor workplace events.
  • Recognize the difference between a "difficult employee" and a person exhibiting a trauma response, and understand why this distinction matters.
  • Apply trauma-informed communication principles when interacting with colleagues or direct reports (e.g.,disarming, creating safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, empowerment).
  • Describe manager/leader best practices for supporting an employee who may be struggling, without overstepping into a clinical or diagnostic role.
  • Identify internal and external resources available for employees (EAP, HR, mental health benefits, community referrals).
  • Explain self-care and boundary-setting practices to prevent secondary/vicarious trauma among those supporting others.
