Description
In this session students will learn the core principles of patient care and how to work with patients in a way that promotes autonomy and dignity. Students will receive evidence-based screening tools for social determinants of health, assessing the patient’s motivation for behavior change and fundamentals in motivational interviewing.

Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify evidence-based screening tools for identifying patients' social determinants of health needs, motivation for health behavior change, and behavioral health concerns that may be present.
  • Describe core principles of patient-centered care that promote patient dignity and autonomy, particularly during interactions with patients.
  • Summarize fundamentals of motivational interviewing and appropriately apply them to patient care examples.
