Description
This program will acquaint the learner with legal issues related to documentation in the practice of nursing. An overview of nursing law regarding practice and legal requirements of nursing documentation methods will be comprehensively addressed. Case studies of actual litigation containing examples of legally defensible documentation and legally indefensible documentation will be carefully examined.

Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify common pitfalls in nursing documentation.
  • Discuss strategies for writing concise, accurate nurses notes.
  • Explore strategies for documenting defensively.
  • Discuss how to document high-risk conversation and difficult situations.
  • Compare and contrast different documentation methods.
  • Recognize the legal implications of nursing documentation.
