Description
Youth suicide is an urgent and critical challenge facing South Carolina, particularly in rural settings. This presentation will describe the state of this behavioral health crisis in South Carolina with a focus on the complexity of this issue in rural communities. Two different tools for assessing youth suicide risk will be shared along with key considerations for their use in various settings. Ethical dilemmas on screening youth for suicide risk also will be explored through case examples.
Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the state of the behavioral health crisis (Youth Suicide) in South Carolina,
  • Develop competency in recognizing, assessing, and preventing suicide as developmentally defined for ages 10-24
  • Recognize and resolve ethical dilemmas faced when working with youth at risk for suicide
