Description
This training explores the often-overlooked impact of medical trauma in children, specifically trauma resulting from bone fractures, surgical interventions, and prolonged medical care. While these experiences are necessary for physical healing, they can leave children with lingering emotional, psychological, and somatic distress. Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of how medical trauma is stored in the body, how it can disrupt a child’s sense of safety, and how to support healing through somatic processing. The course emphasizes the integration of body-based regulation strategies, trauma-informed care principles, and family-centered approaches to restore trust, resilience, and emotional well-being. Through interactive discussion and applied practice, practitioners will learn how to help children safely process their experiences, reconnect with their bodies, and build effective coping mechanisms for future challenges.
Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the unique characteristics of medical trauma in children resulting from bone breaks, surgeries, and medical procedures, including how trauma can be encoded in the body and nervous system.
  • Utilize somatic processing techniques to help children release stored trauma, regulate their nervous systems, and restore a felt sense of safety.
  • Integrate trauma-informed regulation and safety strategies into treatment planning, including collaboration with caregivers, medical professionals, and support systems to create environments that foster resilience and recovery.
