Description
Most pregnancy-related deaths are preventable, yet rural communities face some of the highest risks. This one-hour online module equips healthcare professionals to recognize urgent maternal warning signs, take timely evidence-based action, and connect patients to critical resources—helping save lives and improve maternal outcomes.
Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Define key terminology and core concepts related to maternal mortality to establish a clinically accurate framework for assessment and intervention.
  • Interpret current U.S. and South Carolina maternal mortality data to recognize trends, disparities, and patterns that impact clinical decision-making in rural settings.
  • Identify the primary causes of maternal mortality and associated clinical and social risk factors that increase vulnerability during pregnancy and the postpartum period.
  • Differentiate urgent maternal warning signs from expected physiological changes in pregnancy to support timely and appropriate clinical response.
  • Apply evidence-based interventions and clinical management strategies shown to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality across care settings.
  • Incorporate local, state, and national maternal health resources into patient care plans to improve access to support services for pregnant and postpartum women in rural communities.
