Please join us at the 2026 Pediatric Symposium where a wealth of information will be presented by experts in their fields of expertise. This year's symposium will include topics related to GI, respiratory, blood, and endocrine disorders and social media trends. Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the newborn screening history and process for cystic fibrosis in South Carolina.
  • Discuss the basics of CFTR modulators and their uses.
  • Review the makeup of a cystic fibrosis clinical care team and its value.
  • Recognize that sickle cell disease is a multisystem disorder affecting nearly every organ system and requiring a comprehensive approach to evaluation and management.
  • Identify some of the most common acute complications of sickle cell disease, including vaso-occlusive crisis, fever/infection, stroke.
  • Recognize the importance of rapid triage and evaluation of vaso-occlusive crisis, fever/infection and stroke.
  • Differentiate mesenteric adenitis from other GI-specific pathologies.
  • Appraise the clinical features that suggest a chronic inflammatory process (e.g., IBD) versus the self-limiting nature of mesenteric lymphadenopathy.
  • Develop a management strategy for "benign" abdominal pain that addresses patient/parental anxiety and utilizes supportive GI care without over-medicalization.
  • Discuss the operations of the McLeod Diabetes Center.
  • Differentiate between McLeod’s outpatient vs inpatient services.
  • Review the various types of diabetes.
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of diabetes.
  • Describe current technological advances in diabetes management.
  • Discuss social media trends popular among the pediatric population.
  • Discuss the signs and/or symptoms of social media trends.
  • Discuss ways to discuss the dangers of social media trends with the pediatric population.
