Healthcare Workforce Development Initiative

Filling Gaps in Healthcare Workforce Data to Inform Effective Workforce Strategies

About the Program

South Carolina AHEC’s healthcare workforce development initiative collects data on the non-licensed healthcare workforce from employers in rural and underserved communities to address gaps in healthcare workforce information.

While data on the licensed healthcare workforce is readily available, there is no centralized source of information for non-licensed health professions in the state. More data is needed to inform the development of effective workforce recruitment and retention strategies.

Initiative Goals

  • Collect
Connect with healthcare employers in rural and underserved counties to collect workforce data for non-licensed health professions.

  • Analyze
Assess county-level capacity, adequacy and demand for non-licensed health professions and the availability and output of education/training programs.

  • Disseminate
Share results and information back into the communities and across the state to help stakeholders develop data-driven, effective workforce recruitment and retention policies and strategies.

Timeline

The timeline for the initial phase of this project is January 2026-December 2028. Project phases include:

  • Data Collection: AHEC Regional Healthcare Workforce Development Managers will conduct data collection in rural and medically underserved counties on a rolling basis.
  • Stakeholder Meetings: County-level stakeholder meetings will be held to communicate and discuss the findings with healthcare employers and other community stakeholders. These will take place on a rolling basis as each county’s data collection cycle is completed.
  • Data Dissemination: County-level fact sheets outlining the findings, an interactive statewide data visualization, and other resources will be posted on this webpage as they are completed. Please check back soon for more!
